Anna Nicole Smith The Opera – the latest opera to be staged at London’s Royal Opera House is “Anna Nicole” the everyday story of a large breasted Playboy model who marries a billionaire in his 80s and dies of a drugs overdose.
It seems that the world of opera is keen to get some younger fans as the plot of Anna Nicole is described on their site as:
‘Anna Nicole, a young single mother from Texas, is determined to become famous. But, as she learns, worldwide celebrity comes at a terrible cost.
Anna marries an octogenarian billionaire. After his death she and her lawyer Stern become embroiled in lengthy, expensive legal battles over her husband’s estate. Plagued by the pain caused by her breast implants, she becomes increasingly dependent on booze and painkillers. Her son dies from a drug overdose, and Anna loses herself to despair.’
It sounds more like the plot for a soap opera or a movie but then in their day most opera plots were seen as fairly cutting edge and you needed a racy story to attract a good audience.
The Royal Opera House are obviously keen to encourage younger audience members as they have also dropped the prices of many seats to around £5 for anyone aged between 16 and 25. Keep in mind that some of these seats often go for up to £200 and you can see they are serious about attracting a different crowd to normal.
Operas are known for having some big and busty divas amongst their casts but to play the part of Anna Nicole Smith the Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek has to wear prosthetic breasts to create the right look for the Playboy model.
The opera got some great reviews both from the younger members of the audience and also the established opera critics. Hugh Canning wrote in The Times ‘Who knows if it’s going to be an opera for all times … but she is a classic heroine. If you look at opera, it’s the sort of archetypal rags-to-riches-to-rags that has been the stuff of opera right from the beginning of time.’
Despite Smith dying in 2007 at the age of 39-years old the case concerning her late husband’s huge fortune is till making the news even now. This last week a judge decided that as the case concerning his estate had lasted 20 times longer than Anna Nicole’s marriage to J Howard Marshall II that ‘It is neither reasonable nor practical to go forward.’
That being the case it seems that Anna Nicole’s daughter Dannielyn will not end up as one of the youngest millionaires in the country and it looks like the case has finally hit the end of the road.
If you want to see Anna Nicole near her prime and have a good laugh into the bargain then we can recommend you watch Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult which sees Anna Nicole playing the part of Tanya Peters, one of the villains girlfriends. As you can imagine Inspector Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) has a field day in his scenes with the busty Playboy model.
Tanya Peters: You’re all man. I like that in my men.
Frank Drebin: You’re coming on to me big time, sister. You’re preying on me like a kitten with a fresh mouse. And we got a problem.
Tanya Peters: You’re Jewish?
Frank Drebin: No. You’re Rocko’s girl, and in my book that chapter’s called “look but don’t touch.”
Tanya Peters: I could have two lovers.
Frank Drebin: Kinky. But I like my sex the way I play basketball, one on one with as little dribbling as possible.
You can buy the Blu-ray or dvd of Naked Gun 33 1/3 anytime but if you want to catch the new opera Anna Nicole at the Royal Opera House, London then you only have until the 24th of September. By the way, Naked Gun 33 1/3 also features an uncredited appearance by Raquel Welch.
