Bear Grylls, One Direction

14 Mar

Bear Grylls – the adventurer has been unexpectedly fired  by the Discovery Channel.

His US series known as Man vs Wild but better known as Born Survivor to UK viewers has had all future episodes cancelled. The 6th series finished filming in August 2011. The official statement from the Discovery Channel’s spokesperson said: “Due to a continuing contractual dispute with Bear Grylls, Discovery has terminated all current productions with him.”

A less official source was however quoted as saying that the problems had arisen due to Grylls not wishing to commit to 2 different as yet unannounced programmes for the channel. Grylls’ representative Heather Krug said to Hollywood Reporter:  “Bear’s goal has always been to make life-empowering shows for his many fans around the globe, and he has taken great risks to bring Discovery such award-winning programming over seven seasons.

“Unfortunately, Bear and Discovery have not been able to come to mutual agreement on new programming, and he disagrees with Discovery’s decision to terminate current productions. Bear has loved the Man vs. Wild journey and looks forward to producing further cutting edge content again soon for his loyal audience.”

As well as all his tv work Grylls is also a best-selling author and since 2009 has also had the role of Chief Scout. He has made a big financial success from his adventuring and as well as his main residence on his own island on the  Llŷn Peninsula in Wales, he also owns a house in Malibu and has a house barge on the River Thames.

He moved into tv work after his services career was cut short when he had a freefall parachuting accident in 1996 in Zambia which almost caused him to be paralysed for life. He spent a year in the military rehab centre at Headley Court and whilst there planned an attempt on Mount Everest.

When he finally left Headley Court he had this next stage all planned out and on 16 May 1998 he became the youngest Briton, at the age of 23. to have climbed to the summit of Mt Everest. This record has now been broken but when you take into account Grylls’ earlier parachuting accident his ascent still ranks as something very special.

Bear was recently seen in the UK in his “Wild Weekend With” series which starred Miranda Hart and Jonathan Ross. We are sure that he will find plenty of things to do with his spare time now he has finished with Discovery as well as adventuring, writing and being Chief Scout he is also an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, owns a juice bar, has a range of outdoor survival clothing, his own survival knife range and he is also a motivational speaker.

One Direction – the British boy band are still taking the US by storm as it is revealed that their debut album “Up All Night” has hit the top of the charts.

The deluxe version of the album is at Number 1 and the standard version at Number 2 in the US iTunes downloads chart. They found out the news just after performing to a sell-out crowd at New York’s Rockefeller Plaza as part of top US tv show Today.

The group have certainly come a long way since their appearance on the X Factor back in 2010. THe Today show appearance was their first live US tv show and the group sang “What Makes You Beautiful”, “One Thing” and “More Than This”.

One Direction are having an incredible run over the last few weeks and went to the US just after winning the Best British Single award at this year’s Brits for their UK Number 1 single “What Makes You Beautiful.”

News of One Direction’s US album success was greeted by messages of congratulations from both Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. It also seems that Justin might be looking to record a track with the boys with his manager Scooter Braun that a collaboration was “very possible.”

They have another big chance to impress US tv audiences when they appear on Saturday Night Live on 07 April. In the meantime they look set to take the US by storm on their tour which has already completely sold out.
